Clark County, Indiana is one of two counties that sit directly across the Ohio River from Louisville, KY. Clark County is the county positioned right across from downtown Louisville.
Jeffersonville is the largest town within the county which boasts a marvelous downtown riverside experience, Clarksville comes in second with a well-positioned commercialized area, and Sellersburg and Charlestown follow with a beautiful rural landscape filled with outdoor fun. Other towns within the county are Utica and Borden.
Clark County is named after William Clark’s brother General George Rogers Clark who was rewarded the land after his services in battle. Clarksville was the first settlement in the Northwest Territory in 1783.
Remnants of George Roger Clark’s homesite are still in existence and this is where William Clark was staying when Merriwether Lewis arrived to start their exploration.
Clark County’s main significance to the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail is that this is where Lewis & Clark met up to start their journey before exploring the Louisiana Territory to find a water passage to the Pacific Ocean.
Clark County today is positioned perfectly for a day trip or weekend getaway and can be a breath of fresh air for locals or visitors experiencing Louisville.
