The first county seat in Woodbury was a log house. As the region grew, plans were constructed for a new courthouse, which was completed in 1918. The designers of the Woodbury County Courthouse advocated for the use of Prairie School architecture, a Midwestern style different from the traditional neoclassical or gothic construction of government buildings. Today, the Courthouse has been added to the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as one of the premier Prairie School buildings in the United States. The building’s interior is also remarkable, with elaborate figures representing the law in addition to a two-story, stained-glass dome at the heart of the building. Additionally, intricate murals painted by Chicago-based artist John Warner Norton represent a variety of scenes including farm life and a tribute to soldiers in WWI.
