At Withy Gate we use free and clear detergent and safe cleaning products. We recycle all that we can in this rural community. We encourage guest to shop at the local farmers market just two blocks from Withy Gate on Saturday mornings, May-October. We definitely encourage guest to drink local Blodgett Canyon Cellers wine, craft beer from one of seven breweries located in the Bitterroot Valley (two in Hamilton), or locally produced cider from Montana CiderWorks and several other producers.

Withy Gate is a ranch style home built in the 1950’s. It is in the South Town Hamilton Historic District where you will find lovely homes built in the 1880’s-1940’s. *Note: Withy is another name for willow and refers to the willow garden gate on the property. Enjoy all the Bitterroot Valley has to offer from your centrally located ‘home away from home’ in a quite friendly safe neighborhood. At Withy Gate you will enjoy a completely remodeled kitchen, updated bathroom, hardwood and tile floors throughout. There’s a patio with umbrella and table. Perfect place for morning coffee and evening meals.

You’ll be just a few blocks walk to the River Park Trail System, Rocky Mountain Labs, downtown dining and shopping, and a grocery store with a great espresso stand. Any direction you walk in will take you past lovely old Victorian homes along tree-lined streets. We are pleased to hook you up with a fishing guide, a great place to hike, our favorite masseuse, or direct you to special places. We can help you slip into the local culture and rhythms and refer you to folks who can provide whatever outdoor recreation experience you have in mind. During any season you will enjoy your stay at the clean, cozy, and safe Withy Gate Lodgings.

Site of the Week: Fort Mandan

Though the original fort site is partially submerged beneath the mighty Missouri river, there is a scale model of Fort Mandan that can be visited near Washburn, North Dakota. It is the site at which Sacagawea and her husband joined the Expedition, as well as where her baby, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, was born. The fort took approximately four weeks to build and was named after the friendly nearby tribe, the Mandans.

The Corps of Discovery learned and experienced several things while staying at Fort Mandan. They participated in a buffalo hunt, and danced almost nightly according to Clark’s journal entries. Meriwether Lewis himself delivered baby Jean Baptiste within the cozy fort as temperatures dropped to -40°F that winter. When the frozen river broke free with a roar in the spring, Lewis and Clark sent the keelboat back the way they had come, laden with all that they had discovered up to the point. Among the specimens being sent back was a live prairie dog!

If you are interested in visiting Fort Mandan, plan also to check out the visitor’s center that is just up the road as well. There is a bookstore and gift shop there, as well as a group of highly knowledgeable staff members who are eager to answer questions about Lewis and Clark’s time at Fort Mandan.

The Expedition spent their first January at Camp D

The Expedition spent their first January at Camp DuBois in Illinois. Visit the site where they spent that first winter at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site - Camp River Dubois.

Located at the confluence of the mighty Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, Lewis & Clark State Historic site celebrates the winter that the Lewis & Clark Expedition spent preparing at Camp River Dubois from December 1803 – May 1804. The site includes a 14,000 sq. foot Interpretive Center with theater, reconstructed Camp River Dubois encampment, full-scale keelboat replica, reconstructed early 19th Century Settler’s Cabin, and confluence viewing area.

Camp River Dubois is the location where training and bonding forged the team now known as the Corps of Discovery. Preparations and supplies gathered while wintering in the Illinois Country had an invaluable impact on the Expedition’s success. Staff and volunteers share this rich history with visitors through tours of the site and special programs throughout the year.

Walk in the footsteps of Meriwether Lewis as he bought supplies for the expedition in 1803. At the same time, experience the birth of the United States at key places in the Independence National Historic Park.

Stop 1 - The Independence Visitor Center provides a great starting point for visiting the Independence National Historic Park. You will find knowledgeable rangers, ticket sales, historic films, and interactive exhibits.

Stop 2 - Located at 526 Market Street the Liberty Bell Center has free admission on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to the historic Liberty Bell, the site has exhibits, but no public restrooms.

Stop 3 - Independence Hall is where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were debated and signed. Tickets are required during prime hours.

Site of the Week: The Lewis and Clark Visitor’s Center at Gavins Point Dam

By August of 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition had entered the land of the Yankton Sioux, a powerful tribe on the Missouri River. Lewis and Clark were tasked with notifying them that the United States now had a claim over their land. So, on August 29, the expedition met with the tribe at a site called Calumet Bluff where Lewis gave his routine speech and the customary gifts were handed out.

Today, the Lewis and Clark Visitor’s Center at Gavins Point Dam sits on Calumet Bluff, overlooking the nearly two-mile-long Gavins Point Dam. The dam was originally planned to be built further upstream at Gavins Point,the place from which the dam gets its name. However, even though it was constructed at a different site (which resulted in the formation of Lewis and Clark Lake), the dam maintained its original name throughout the project.

The visitor’s center, which is operated by the Army Corp of Engineers, has exhibits pertaining to the wildlife and rich history of the area. Information regarding recreation on Lewis and Clark Lake is also available, as well as a gift shop and bookstore. There is a viewing deck on the back of the visitor’s center which allows visitors to view the Gavins Point Dam.
