Beginning in 1991, projects began to revitalize riverfront land after years of built-up pollution. These restoration efforts led to the creation of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail System, which now offers visitors 33 miles of riverfront trails. This vast trail system allows adventurers to make their way through Pittsburgh and its surrounding regions alongside all three of Pittsburgh’s famous rivers: the Allegheny, Monogahela, and the Ohio, where the Lewis & Clark journey began.
Three Rivers Heritage Trail system operates under the main principle of establishing a clean, safe environment that anyone can use and enjoy. Along the trail there are 28 access points accompanied with parking options, bathrooms water fountains, and businesses where trail users can stop for a quick rest or snack. The trail serves as a perfect connection between urban areas and green space, allowing trail-goers to escape the city and appreciate scenery, bird watch, or study wildflowers.
Three Rivers Heritage Trails sees over 800,000 visits annually, 65% of which utilize the trail year-round. Aside from the user benefits, the trail has generated a total of $8.3 million dollars in economic benefits for the surrounding region. With the help of volunteers, the trail continues to evolve and remain a safe, fun space to spend time.
Whether it be by bike, foot, or rollerblade, set off on your own journey alongside the same river where the Lewis & Clark journey began. For more information on the Trail, visit friendsoftheriverfront.org.
