After the Roger Williams Park Zoo, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is the second oldest zoo in the United States, founded in 1873 and officially inaugurated in 1872. It is located in Cincinnati, Ohio’s Avondale area. It started with 64.5 acres in the heart of the city, but has since expanded to include adjacent blocks and many reserves on Cincinnati’s outskirts. In 1987, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark. Over 500 animal species and 3,000 plant types are housed at the zoo. In addition, the zoo has run various breeding operations throughout the years, including being the first to successfully breed California sea lions. The Lindner Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) was established in 1986 to support the zoo’s conservation goals. Martha, the last live passenger pigeon, and Incas, the last living Carolina parakeet, are both residents of the zoo.
