On December 20, 1803—while the captains and crew settled in Illinois for the winter—The Cabildo saw the formal transfer of the province of Louisiana to the United States. The Louisiana Purchase transfer is but one of the many significant events in the Cabildo’s history which served as the center of New Orleans government between 1799 and 1853.
The Cabildo exhibits cover artists, pirates, history of the building, and the legacy of Spain in New Orleans. No trip to the New Orleans’ French Quarter would be complete without a stop at The Cabildo.
