Devoted to the history and heritage of Western Pennsylvania, the Senator John Heinz History Center is Pennsylvania’s largest history museum and a proud affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. The 370,000 square-foot museum presents compelling stories from American history with a Western Pennsylvania connection in an interactive environment perfect for visitors of all ages.
Visit the launch point for the Lewis & Clark Expedition across the street from the Heinz History Center (1212 Smallman Street), then explore the “Smithsonian’s Home in Pittsburgh.” The museum’s “Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation” exhibition features a lifelike figure of Meriwether Lewis, who began his journey west from Fort Fayette in August 1803.
Relive the greatest exploring expedition in American history as part of the History Center’s long-term exhibit, “Rediscovering Lewis & Clark: A Journey with the Rooney Family,” featuring an exciting collection of photographs and materials gathered by the Rooneys, long-time owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
