Portsmouth Floodwall Murals

The Portsmouth Floodwall Murals cover over 2000 feet of the city’s floodwall. Subjects include:

• The Portsmouth Earthworks—a large mound complex constructed by the Ohio Hopewell culture from 100 BCE to 500 CE.
• Lower Shawneetown—a nearby 18^th century Shawnee village.
• The 1749 “Lead Plate Expedition” led by Pierre Joseph Céloron de Blainville.
• Tecumseh—a Shawnee leader who directed a large confederacy
• Henry Massie— a founder and surveyor who laid out plat in 1803.
• Battery L—a Civil War unit from Portsmouth, Battery that fought at Gettysburg
• Jim Thorpe—Native American athlete and player/coach for the Portsmouth Shoesteels
• Portsmouth Spartans—NFL team from 1929 to 1933 that become the Detroit Lions.
• Branch Rickey—the signer of Jackie Robinson to Major League Baseball.
• Clarence Holbrook Carter, an American Regionalist and surrealist painter.
• Ohio River flood of 1937.
