Built in 1909, the Pendleton Art Center building was a originally a shoe manufacturing warehouse, later being purchase in the mid 1900s by the Shillito’s Department Store. It would become the company’s main warehousing facility within the business. This would be the building purpose until 1991, when it was sold off to the Verdin Company, who were the world largest bell and clock manufacturer. They Verdin Company acquired the warehouse and transformed it into the Art Center that it is known to today, in order to help support and showcase the works of local artists. A fun fact about the Pendleton Art Center, it is the world’s largest collection of artists under one, singular roof, with over 200 plus artists. The Pendleton Art Center is an eight story building that acts as a sanctuary for art of various mediums and styles. Moreover, it is a home for numerous social events and art classes. It is a wonderful place to visit, to browse the array of diverse art that is on display. The Pendleton Art Center hosts a special event every month on the last Friday of said month, dubbing it last Friday. This event is also extended to the first Friday as well, being named First Friday.
