Ohio County Courthouse-Rising Sun, IN
The Ohio County Courthouse located in Rising Sun, Indiana, is Indiana’s oldest in continuous use.
According to 1885 history books of Dearborn and Ohio Counties, “This a substantial two-story brick building, stands on the center part of the square facing Main Street, amid a grove of beautiful shade trees; the building is fifty feet deep, with a portico of twelve feet in front supported by large round pillars, making in all 60 X 40 feet wide. The first story is arranged for offices and jury rooms, and is nine feet high; the court room is on the second floor. The building stands on the highest ground in the corporation, and was erected in 1845.”
According to its Historic marker, “In its northeast corner was deposited the first courthouse cornerstone in the State laid with Masonic ceremonies. Traditional rites were held July 4, 1844 Colonel Abel C. Pepper. P.G.M. officiating.”
An 1989 renovation and expansion took place since the updating costs was less than demolition and building a new structure. The Ohio County Courthouse is located at 413 Main Street in Rising Sun,
