The Medicine Lake is a captivating place, often described as a “prairie oasis” where you can feel and experience the nature’s beauty, whilst getting to see species you would not be able to spot anywhere else.
Located on the heavily glaciated rolling plains of northeastern Montana between the Missouri River and the Canadian border, the Refuge constitutes an important breeding and stopover habitat for a diverse range of migratory birds. It was established in 1935 with the aim to protect migratory waterfowl. The site provides endless opportunities for visitors to engage in activities such as wildlife observation, photography, fishing, and environmental education. The place has much to offer throughout all the seasons – during the warmer months, you may enjoy walking on driving the many gravel roads along the refuge, spotting numerous bird species such as pelicans or hawks. During the colder months when the lake is frozen, you can see ice houses set up for ice fishing. Many visitors also mention seeing foxes or coyotes, so make sure you don’t miss out the chance of stopping by this awesome spot!
