Civil rights leader Malcolm X was born in Omaha in 1925. Although the original house no longer stands, the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation and the state of Nebraska maintain a historical marker at the site which memorializes his contributions to the country. This memorial continues to develop, as it covers 17-acres in northeast Omaha. The plaza and educational memorial are open to the public, as are the grounds which continue to be improved. Educational tours are available for all ages at the site on Friday and Saturday afternoons, or call the Foundation to schedule an appointment. Nearby, visit the Malcolm X Center and the Aframerican Bookstore to continue learning.
