As the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase territory, Natchitoches is a must-see attraction for those interested in Louisiana history.
In historic downtown Natchitoches, tour and shop at Louisiana’s oldest general store—Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile. The French Market District offers six blocks of unique shops, eateries, and landmarks. Cruise the river on the Cane River Queen, explore Fort St. Jean Baptiste and historic plantations, or visit the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame & Northwest History Museum.
Natchitoches played a role in Thomas Jefferson’s Western Expeditions than ran concurrent with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Thomas Freeman and Peter Custis left Natchitoches in June 1806 determined to explore the headwaters of the Red River and Zebulon Pike was returned to this city after his arrest by the Spanish in 1807.
