In the first half of 1803, Meriwether Lewis relied on the Harpers Ferry Armory and Arsenal for custom-built weaponry, equipage, and a collapsible iron-framed boat.
Today, Harpers Ferry is a historic town and National Historic Park at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. The site hosts John Brown’s Fort—the focal point for those interested in Brown’s historic raid against slavery. The traveler will also find museums, exhibits, 19th-century shops, and a bookstore. The former Storer College campus—a historically black college—and the headquarters of the Appalachian Trail can also be visited. Civil War buffs will want to see the Civil War Museum and nearby battlefields.
The park has over 20 miles of hiking trails. Given Lewis’s propensity to explore nature, no doubt he walked some of them during his extended stays at the armory. You could be sharing some of his favorite viewpoints!
