Green Bottom has long been a popular location beginning with the Clover Site, a prehistoric Native American village that was part of the Fort Ancient culture. Artifacts found there are curated by the Huntington Museum of Art. Today, you can find prime wetlands, trails, hunting, fishing, and a boat launch. The nearby Green Bottom Wetlands Island Float Trip is a popular overnight location for paddlers.
In September 1803, Meriwether Lewis passed by this bottom on his way to rendezvous with William Clark at the Falls of the Ohio. The wetlands are still a great place to spot an Eastern spiny softshell turtle as seen by fellow traveler Thomas Rodney who passed here a few days after Lewis:
“He [Wood] had given us a soft shelled turtle in the morning which the Major had prepared for cooking. These turtles I believe are peculiar to this river and are plenty in it.”
—Thomas Rodney, September 30, 1803
