Glacier National Park was established on May 11, 1910. It abuts the Canadian border and its Waterton Lakes National Park, forming together the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. The park boasts over 1 million acres of land, at least 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 species of plants and a minimum of 200 species of animals.
A number of hotels and chalets were constructed by the Great Northern Railway to promote tourism and travel on its line. They allow ready access to hiking trails and other forms of outdoor recreation. The Going to the Sun Road, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark completed in 1932, provides a beautifully scenic drive through the park.
