This state park was named after an old late 1800s fort that supplied many military posts along the Dakota Territory. Located just south of Garrison, Fort Stevenson State Park rests along the north shore of Lake Sakakawea. Whether you enjoy walking on dryland or prefer to explore Lake Sakakawea by boat there is plenty to do in this state park. For hikers, there are nearly ten total miles of trails. With many of the trails being no longer than the 2.32-mile-long Flicker Loop, visitors can hike most of the park in a day or two’s time. Boaters can take advantage of either the Garrison Bay Marina or the De Trobriand Bay Marina to sail the waters of Lake Sakakawea. For those that wish to stay a few days at the park, there are cabins and campgrounds so visitors can take it one day at a time enjoying what Fort Stevenson State Park has to offer.
