Standing as the oldest architectural landmark in Pittsburgh is The Fort Pitt Block House, this National Historic Landmark was built in 1764 as a small defensive redoubt and is the only surviving structure of Fort Pitt — a key British fortification during the French and Indian War, which also served as the western headquarters of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Much of the original building and its materials remain intact, and it is the nation’s only authenticated pre-Revolutionary War structure west of the Allegheny Mountains.
1894 marked a transfer of ownership to the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Immediately after this occurrence, efforts began to restore the landmark to an operable state. Point State Park, which is the area surrounding the house, has since developed as well, however, the DAR have maintained their ownership as well as operations of the house as a tourist and historical destination. Tours are open to the public and are free!
