The Floyd River Campsite Rock, located along the Chris Larsen Park Riverfront Trail east of Floyd Boulevard, depicts events that occurred August 20-21, 1804 when the Lewis & Clark Expedition stopped at the site where the rock is currently located. Sergeant Charles Floyd was the only member of the Corps of Discovery to die during the journey and is buried on the bluff overlooking the Missouri River under the monument that bears his name. It is believed that the Corps traveled back upstream following the burial to camp and plan for what would come next.
The rock was painted by artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, known for his iconic paintings of the 99 Freedom Rocks in each county across the state of Iowa.
The project was led by the Sergeant Floyd Tri-State Chapter, including partnerships with the Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance and the City of Sioux City.
Find access to the rock via the Riverfront Trail’s pedestrian bridge near the Seaboard Triumph Foods Expo Center.
