Fireman’s Park is so named in honor of our volunteer fire department and the park is along the river next door to the Fire Department. The land that the park sits on was the location of the volunteer fire department’s bingo hall. In 2015, the building was torn down and the city installed public docks with a ramp leading to the dock system.  There is a pavilion that is dedicated to one of the city leaders who worked to see the waterfront improved and better utilized, Mr. Bryan Wilson.  It is a lovely green space nestled in historic downtown New Martinsville. Along with providing a place for boaters to dock, visitors can stroll the park and see amazing views of the Ohio River. A landscaped swing has also been added in the memory of Dillon Jackson.

Wetzel County was formed in 1863. It was one of only 50 counties to be admitted to the Union during the civil war. Originally, Wetzel County was a large township but it became too difficult to manage the entire land area so Wetzel was broken down into 7 districts with New Martinsville being one of them.
