Elk Point, South Dakota, holds a significant place in the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as the site of a pivotal moment in their journey. While camped at the “Elk Sign” campsite on August 22, 1804, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark oversaw the replacement of Sergeant Charles Floyd, who had succumbed to illness just two days prior. This solemn occasion led to the first recorded election in the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase, marking an extraordinary break from standard military custom.
The Corps of Discovery elected Private Patrick Gass to take on the role of sergeant, a decision influenced by his reputation as a man of “capacity, diligence, and integrity,” as noted by Captain Lewis. Gass, at 33 years old, was one of the most seasoned members of the Corps and a skilled carpenter, essential qualities on the frontier.
Patrick Gass would go on to chronicle the expedition in his journal, a remarkable feat given his limited formal education. His writings provide invaluable insights into the journey, offering a unique perspective on the Corps’ experiences. After the expedition, Gass settled in Wellsburg, Virginia (now West Virginia), and lived to the remarkable age of 99, becoming the last surviving member of the Corps of Discovery.
Elk Point also served as a place of reunion for the Corps of Discovery on September 3, 1806, as they returned from their groundbreaking expedition. Upon their arrival, they encountered James Aird, a Scottish fur trader, who provided news from the United States, including updates on President Jeffersonâs reelection and the tragic death of Alexander Hamilton in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr.
Today, Elk Point stands as a testament to this rich history. Visitors to the area can explore historical markers commemorating the events of August 22, 1804, including the election of Patrick Gass, a moment that symbolized the democratic ideals of a young nation and its brave explorers venturing into uncharted territory.
