Within the heart of the White Cliffs, Eagle Creek Boat Camp is the most popular destination in the entire Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. On the last day of May 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition also camped here. The scenery of that day inspired Lewis to write:
“As we passed on it seemed as if those seens of visionary inchantment would never have and end; for here it is too that nature presents to the view of the traveler vast ranges of walls of tolerable workmanship”
Eagle Creek Camp has two vault toilets, five iron fire rings, and ample hiking opportunities including a slot canyon in Neets Coulee. The site is on private land with a recreation easement managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
Eagle Creek has no public road access, so plan to visit via boat. The Bureau of Land Management or an outfitter can assist with planning your trip. The two BLM Boaters’ Guide booklets are essential for anyone planning a self-supported trip through the breaks:
