The Chatham University Arboretum is a 32-ace arboretum located, as its name suggests, on the Chatham University campus between the neighborhoods of Shadyside and Squirrel Hill. 2017 marked the 20th anniversary of the designation of the university’s arboretum designation. The Arboretum is such an exceptional asset and is the perfect locale for meeting friends, studying, or just sitting and relaxing.
The Chatham University Arboretum and Tree City Campus features more than 115 different varieties of trees, including Japanese flowering crabapple, river birch, Kentucky coffee tree, eleven species of maple dawn redwood, bald cypress, yellowwood, katsura tree, cucumber magnolia, and Carolina silverbell. The arboretum is an outdoor classroom for students in the University’s Landscape Architecture and Landscape Studies programs. It offers an on-campus outdoor classroom suitable for any age or interest; from younger students on class trips, to visiting scientists, even the university’s own students.
In 1997, Chatham joined the American Public Garden Association (APGA), an association for North American public gardens and their professional staff. The mission of APGA is to serve and strengthen public gardens throughout North America by supporting and promoting their work, value, and achievements in horticultural display, education, research, and plant conservation. The Chatham Arboretum is also part of the Pittsburgh Garden Trail.
