Wheeling’s Centre Market was built in 1853; it’s older than the state of West Virginia itself. It’s the oldest market house in the country, and it was built when Wheeling was a commercial powerhouse because it was viewed as the “Gateway to the West.” Imagine how it would feel to be in a bustling market right before you embarked on a trip to the wilderness of the West, or better yet, experiencing all of the market’s activity after seeing little but wagons and prairie for months as you returned East. While it isn’t a major meeting point between traders from the East and the West anymore, you will be shopping in the same place that locals have frequented for nearly 170 years!
Centre Market is full of local businesses and it has something for everyone. There are restaurants, art stores, antique shops, and many other attractions. The one defining theme is that the establishments have to be locally owned. You’ll be able to find delicious treats and perfect gifts! There are also sometimes special events and musical performances, so be sure to see if any of them happen when you’re visiting. These events are celebrated by the shops, and there’s one the first Friday of every month.
