The North Head Trail can be accessed at the Lewis and Clark Monument at McKenzie Head and the North Head Lighthouse both within Cape Disappointment State Park.
Generally considered a moderately challenging route, this 6.8-mile trail takes an average of 3 hours and 11 minutes to complete. The best times to visit this trail are March through October. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
William Clark of the Lewis & Clark Expedition brought a group along this route when they went to see the Ocean in November 1805. After beholding the view from McKenzie Head, they encamped. The next day, they continued north reaching the beach near Beard’s Hollow. There are a few signs along the way detailing that journey.
The farther you get from either trailhead, the more rugged and muddy the trail becomes.
