Lewis and Clark’s interaction with the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) Nation was a significant part of their 1804–1806 expedition to explore the western territories of the United States. During their journey up the Missouri River, the Lewis and Clark expedition spent the winter of 1804–1805 among the Mandan and Hidatsa people in what is now North Dakota. They built Fort Mandan near the villages of the MHA Nation, staying from October 1804 to April 1805.
