Located on a small island on the Ohio River, Blennerhasset Mansioin within the Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park is one of the most gorgeous places to visit in West Virginia.
Blennerhassett Mansion is a Palladian house that Lewis would have seen moving down the Ohio mid-September 1803. At the time, it was considered the West’s most beautiful home. Two years after Lewis, former Vice President Aaron Burr stopped here and convinced Harman Blennerhassett to let him use the Island as headquarters for his murky and possibly treasonous campaign to move to Spanish-held Texas, known today as the Burr Conspiracy.
The park is open from May to the last weekend of October with access via a sternwheeler riverboat that leaves Point Park on 2nd Street in Parkersburg. Tours of the mansion and horse-drawn carriage rides are available, and the park also provides hiking, biking, and fishing opportunities.
