As the Corps of Discovery entered what is now Oregon and Washington, they saw many waterfalls and the natural wonders of the eastern parts of Oregon and Washington. A natural wonder in eastern Washington is Palouse Falls near LaCrosse. Visit this Washington State official waterfall while traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail! Designated as Washington State’s official waterfall in 2014, thanks to a petition made by local elementary school students, Palouse Falls is a 200 ft waterfall that drops into a churning bowl, before flowing along a massive columnar basalt gorge that was formed during the Missoula Floods of the last great Ice Age. The landscape of golden plains contrasts strongly with the mossy walls and river of the gorge, making it a prime location for landscape photography or painters. The unique geology and historic flood path, both of which are attributed to the last ice age, provide students, geology fans, and history buffs with an incredible chance to learn about how part of the state was formed, and the generational effects that the river and the gorge have had on people in the area.

Palouse Falls State Park, which contains the falls, provides an excellent spot for picnics, wildlife viewing, and interpretation of the area. It is the launching point of many hikes around and into the gorge, all of which vary in difficulty, making it an excellent place for families or more experienced hikers. It is definitely one of the top natural wonders of Washington, and worth a stop if you are traveling in the area.

“When Lewis and Clark stopped at this spot on September 15, 1806, atop a high bluff with a sweeping view of the Missouri River Valley, they noted that the site offered a "commanding situation for a fort.

Today, this spot is in downtown Kansas City - Clark's Point. The sculpture depicts Lewis, Clark, York, and Sacagawea holding her baby Jean Baptiste and Seaman (Lewis's newfoundland dog). Eugene Daub, one of America's leading figurative sculptures, created the work."

“On July 25, 1806, while descending the Yellowstone River, Clark “arived at a remarkable rock Situated in an extensive bottom on the Stard. Side of the river & 250 paces from it.”

He wrote that, “this rock I ascended and from it’s top had a most extensive view in every direction. This rock which I shall Call Pompy’s Tower [named for Jean Baptiste ‘Pomp’ Charbonneau] is 200 feet high and 400 paces in secumphrance and only axcessable on one Side which is from the N. E the other parts of it being a perpendicular Clift of lightish Coloured gritty rock on the top there is a tolerable Soil of about 5 or 6 feet thick Covered with Short grass.

The Indians have made 2 piles of Stone on the top of this Tower. The nativs have ingraved on the face of this rock the figures of animals &c. near which I marked my name and the day of the month & year.”

Although Clark named the feature “Pompys Tower” in his original journal entry, Nicholas Biddle altered the name to “Pompey’s Pillar” for the 1814 published history of the expedition. Clark’s inscription is the only known visible evidence of the entire journey that remains intact. Pompeys Pillar was established as a national monument in 2001. An on-site visitor center interprets the expedition’s travels through the Yellowstone River valley.”
