Schenley Park is located in the heart of the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The 456-acre park hosts numerous activities. In 2011 the park was names one of “America’s Coolest City Parks” by Travel and Leisure. Schenley Park is the second largest municipal park in Pittsburgh and borders the campuses of University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
The park land was donated by major Pittsburg philanthropist Mary Schenley, the daughter of frontier Pittsburgh businessman James O’Hara. The park was created in 1889 and is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
While there are multiple entrances to Schenley Park, the grand entrance to the park is Schenley Plaza. Schenley Plaza is located on Forbes Avenue and surrounds a plaza that is home to the Cathedral of Learning, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Carnegie Library, the Frick Fine Arts building, Posvar Hall (which has the outline to the original Pittsburgh baseball Stadium, Forbes Field, and home plate) and Hillman Library. On the Plaza is a beautiful garden, a pavilion, and multiple kiosk restaurants, a restaurant called The Porch, the PNC carousel, and public restrooms.
Schenley Park has amenities such as:
There are many events that take place in Schenley Park, including the Vintage Grand Prix, and the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure, both of which are annual events.
