The Frick Art Museum and its collections are the legacy of Helen Clay Frick’s personal art collection, the daughter of one of America’s greatest Industrialists and art collectors.
Helen Clay was strongly influenced by her father’s interest in art collecting, and from an early age she took an active interest in his collection. As a young woman Helen Clay Frick began assembling her own art collection, increasing her acquisitions in the 1960s in preparation for the opening of The Frick Art Museum.
Opened in 1970, the Frick Art Museum hosts a collection of outstanding examples of early-Renaissance Sienese painting and 18th century French painting. With art on display created by the likes of Peter Paul Rubens and Jean Honoré Fragonard you can immerse yourself in the culture of the Gilded Age and the exquisite taste of those who lived in that gilded world, and the artwork that inspired their lifestyle.
There are also seasonal art exhibitions, many of which are special installations from national and international museums, such as the VMFA. Other exhibitions highlight the impressive collections of Henry Clay himself.
Along with Helen Clay’s remarkable collection of artworks, there is also a lavish collection of vintage cars and carriages. Including vintage cars such as some of the first horseless carriages, and early racing cars dated back to the turn of the 20thcentury. This impressive collection reflects a fine example of hoe automobiles, and horseless carriages impacted Pittsburgh, as well as Pittsburgh’s role in the developing automobile industry.
The museum boasts wonderful exhibitions of:
The Greenhouse, Clayton, and the Café are also located on the 5.5 acre landscape of the Frick.
