Situated along the scenic Ohio River, the City of Rising Sun is the county seat of Ohio County, Indiana.
With its beautiful and convenient riverfront location, Rising Sun was a seasonal stop for hundreds of flatboats heading down the Ohio River in the 1830s. Situated across the river from Rabbit Hash, KY, Rising Sun is about 45 minutes from Cincinnati, OH.
The town was registered in 1816 by John James of Fredericksburgh, MD, with several theories as to how he selected “Rising Sun” as the name of his new locale. Some say it was taken from an early ferry on the riverfront. Others speculate that James chose it because he was so struck by the view of the sun rising over the Kentucky hills.
The smallest county in Indiana, Ohio County is the home of Indiana’s oldest courthouse in continuous use. The structure is a two-story Greek Revival brick building supported by Doric pillars.
Enjoy the warm hospitality of the Downtown Rising Sun shop owners. Businesses and eateries are within walking distance of the Ohio River or on the outskirts of town. Grab a carry-out a meal and walk to the riverfront to dine on picnic tables or along the amphitheater wall.
Venture farther into town and view the local treasures inside the Ohio County Historical Museum or book a walking tour of local cemeteries and Underground Railroad sites.
Answer your “Call of the Wild” by making an appointment at the Red Wolf Sanctuary and Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. From bears and wolfs and other wildlife, learn more about wildlife rehabilitation at this not-for-profit facility.
Lodging is conveniently located in downtown Rising Sun with other facilities less than five minutes away from the waterfront. If camping is more your style, several sites await your arrival.
With public boat docking and boat launching at the riverfront, travel to town by the Ohio River or depart from Rising Sun. Boats and kayaks welcome!
Rising Sun is a golf-cart friendly City with carts available for rent (in season) at the Ohio County Visitors Center on High Street.
