Heritage Port Park reconnects Wheeling to the Ohio River with park spaces, an amphitheater, mooring facilities, and trails. The linear, three-acre park celebrates and interprets Wheeling’s natural, cultural and historical legacy.
In September 1803, Meriwether Lewis had many of his goods shipped here by wagon to help get the military barge through the Ohio’s shallow water at that season. Later, what would become known as the National Road was extended from Brownsville to Wheeling, and this port competed with Pittsburgh to dominate the Ohio shipping trade.
The park is the site of the annual Italian Festival, the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks, and weekly concerts/movies, among many other events.
