Missoula’s two most prominent mountains may stand out to visitors, for they are each adorned with a letter. Mount Sentinel, the more Southern mountain, has a letter M for the University of Montana, and Mount Jumbo, the Northern peak’s letter L was built by students from Loyola High School. The M hike is a moderate hike that should be on the top of every visiting Missoulian’s bucket list, clocking in at just under one mile and around 600 feet of elevation gain. It’s easy to take the M hike at your own pace; there are benches at each switchback to rest if the elevation takes your breath away. The views from the letter showcases panoramic views of the town. If you’re feeling extra ambitious, you can continue up the trails to the peak of Mount Sentinel. A word of warning though, Montana can get snowy and icy quickly, as can these two trails. Be sure to exercise caution in the winter months.
