Kelley Point Park is at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. President Jefferson and the captains knew about the rumored “Waters of California”—a river some thought was a waterway to California. The captains were looking for it in 1805 heading down the Columbia and again in 1806 returning home. They missed it both times! With the help of Clackamas guides, Clark returned here and went a few miles up the Willamette.
Kelley Point has accessible restrooms and picnic tables with paved access. The site has beaches along both rivers (no-swimming) and trails through its 90 acres of black cottonwood forest. A 1.2-mile loop trail is great for birding, hiking, and running, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. The park is also a great spot to launch a canoe or kayak or to walk or bike the 40-mile Portland Loop Trail.
