A Victorian mansion built in 1881, converted into a Sanitarium, and now serving as a museum, the Vaile Mansion holds a lot of history within its walls. The historic house museum is currently operated by the Vaile Victorian Society and in 2024 is undergoing exterior restoration projects. While it is open to the public to showcase a preserved example of a Second Empire house, the Vaile Mansion is also well-known for its events. Each June, the house hosts a Strawberry Festival. Other seasonal events that highlight Victorian culture include the Christmas Open House, the Spring Tea in March, and Spirits with the Spirits in October. Called “the most princely house and the most comfortable home in the entire west” by the Kansas City Tribune in 1882, the National Register of Historic Places recognized the house in 1969.
