Garrison Dam

Garrison Dam
Coleharbor North Dakota 58531

Information

lat: 47.4922904 long: -101.3920364

Constructed in 1953, Garrison Dam is the fifth largest earthen dam structure in the United States.  Along with other dams on the Missouri River’s tributaries, it reduces the risk of downstream flooding.  Other operations include hydropower generation in addition to managing water supply, water quality, and irradiation.  It also helps to preserve fish and wildlife.

Walk-in-tours of the dam are available from June 4-August 1 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 2pm.  The Spillway Overlook Recreation Area located on the top of Garrison Dam features views of Lake Sakakawea, the reservoir created by the dam, in addition to interpretive panels explaining the dam’s purpose and the future site of a native prairie restoration walk.
