The Audubon National Wildlife Refuge offers more than 14,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie and wetlands around Lake Audubon. It was originally known as Snake Creek National Wildlife Refuge when it first opened back on May 25, 1956. Eventually, it was renamed to pay respects to 19th-century wildlife painter and naturalist John James Audubon. Nowadays people can explore the refuge to see how its many species including sparrows, sharp-tailed grouse, fox, coyote, white-tailed deer along with other waterfowls like shorebirds, gulls, terns, rails, and cranes. The refuge offers various ways to educate and volunteer in its efforts like events such as Blue Goose Day. Hikers can walk on trails along the refuge including the 13-mile North Country National Scenic Trail. For those that prefer a shorter walk, they can the one-and-a-half-mile-long Prairie Nature Trail for an easy walk. The Audubon National Wildlife Refuge is a great outdoor activity for families and animal lovers alike.
