First established in 1864 and reconstructed four years later, this fort protected transportation along the upper Missouri River. An important cultural contact intersection, the Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1868 was signed here by Lakota Tribe members who were absent at the treaty conference in Wyoming. Such efforts in establishing peace were made possible by Major Galpin and his wife, Matilda a Lakota member known as Eagle Woman.

Today the buildings of cottonwood and sod have left their impressions on the landscape and the State Historical Society of North Dakota have placed a marker on its site stating its historical significance. Interpretive signage of the functions of each of the fort’s buildings help visitors visualize Fort Rice’s past.

Other from history, this site also offers visitors beautiful views of the Missouri River and the luscious Plain’s environment! This hidden gem is only a quick trip away from Bismark and near other sites like Fort Yates.
