Until vehicles were prevalent in Pittsburgh, people required a method to go from their homes (which were often on top of the hillsides) to the mills and industries (typically oriented along the river). Many funicular inclines were built during the period to transport passengers up and down the slopes. However, when vehicles became more widespread, many of the inclines closed and were demolished. Today, just two remain (both on Mount Washington), and one, the Duquesne Incline, is a popular destination for both visitors and locals alike—not only because it is almost 140 years old, but also because the trip offers one of the most stunning skyline views of Pittsburgh you’ll ever see!
