Site of the Week: Spirit Mound

The native tribes of the area told Lewis and Clark that the mound was a “mountain of evel spirits” and a “hill of little people.” Skeptical, Lewis and Clark gathered ten men and set out to investigate. They were also warned by the locals that these “little people” would fire arrows at them upon their approach.

Fortunately, Lewis and Clark did not encounter any spirits at Spirit Mound. Instead, they observed the numerous bison milling about the prairie and the large number of birds that flocked over the mound itself. Clark surmised that the birds might have been gathering there to feed on insects present at the mound. The journals also remarked that the heat was so great that the men complained of terrible thirst and that Lewis’s dog, Seaman, was left near a creek so that he wouldn’t overheat.

While the movement of the rivers over time have caused dramatic changes to the land, Spirit Mound has remained largely unchanged since the expedition. It is one of the few places where visitors need not worry if they are truly walking in the steps of Lewis and Clark. Although there is no visitors center onsite, Spirit Mound has informative signage and a small parking lot. There is a grassy walking trail that leads from the parking lot all the way to the top of the mound.

Site of the Week: Locust Grove

Locust Grove was established in 1792 by William and Lucy Clark Croghan and has seen many famous people over the years. Among them are Presidents James Monroe and Andrew Jackson and the famous naturalist John James Audubon. Lewis and Clark also visited the house and regaled them with stories of the west over dinner.

Locust Grove is situated in Louisville, Kentucky, about 4,000 feet south of the Ohio River. Surrounding the house is a well-maintained grass lawn with a parking lot for visitors. Besides the house itself, there is a visitor’s center with a gift shop. Guides offer highly informative tours of the house, giving visitors a view into what life was like for these members of the Clark family. Besides being a significant site for Lewis and Clark historians, one room on the first floor of Locust Hill also housed former American Revolution General George Rogers Clark (brother to both Lucy Croghan and William Clark) during the final years of his life.
