History of Breweries in Madison, IN
As one of the primary brewing communities west of the Alleghenies, Madison’s four breweries created extraordinary lagers from 1818-1918. Back then, most of the distilleries were worked by Germans who brought their own recipes from Europe. The brewing business was exceptionally prosperous in Madison until Forbiddance. Madison has the most established standing distillery working in Indiana, the Greiner Brewery, east of downtown. The Greiner building was the site of Madison’s first brewery.
2018 denoted the 100th Commemoration and the return of brewing to Madison. Mad Paddle opened their microbrewery late in 2018. The Brewery is situated in a previous feed store, and has large plans to ultimately turn into a “brewstillery,” with extra spirits distilled in house. The Mad Paddle is a family and pet friendly(visitors must be 13+) microbrewery and taproom. It provides a wonderful atmosphere for groups, and outdoor seating. Locals and tourists alike enjoy the Thursday-Saturday night Live Music, special events, and more!
The dry spell in Madison is finally over!
