Between 1828 and 1867, Fort Union was the most important fur trade post on the Upper Missouri River. Here, the Assiniboine and six other Northern Plains Indian Tribes exchanged buffalo robes and smaller furs for goods from around the world, including cloth, guns, blankets, and beads. A bastion of peaceful coexistence, the post annually traded over 25,000 buffalo robes and $100,000 in merchandise.

Be sure to stop at the Trade House just inside the front fort gates in the summer and early fall. Living history interpreters, rangers and staff will help you understand why Fort Union was the most important trading post on the Upper Missouri, why it endured for so long, and how, when, and why trading transactions occurred. Also, look for demonstrations of historical skills like blacksmithing, weaving, and barrel-making during the 2021 summer season.

Some of our main attractions for the summer are the Fort Union Rendezvous, the third weekend in June; Indian Arts Showcase, the first weekend in August; Living History Weekend; and Kids Craft Days on Saturdays 11-2 from July 3 to August 14. All events showcase the history and culture of this amazing place. Explore the park’s calendar to learn more.
