The story of Mothman brings countless regional tourists to the area every year, usually culminating in September’s festival. Because of all the stories, a museum dedicated to West Virginia’s favorite Cryptid was opened. At the museum, visitors will find archives of first-hand accounts with the alleged monster, props from Sony’s film “The Mothman Prophecies”, replicas, press-clippings, and video. The museum also has an impressive collection of memorabilia, t-shirts, and mementos to make any visitor remember his or her trip to the alleged home of Mothman.

The events that took place during the 1960s in Point Pleasant led to other visitors coming to the area. According to the legend, the Men in Black also visited the town to conduct secret investigations into the legend of Mothman. The museum includes this in its exhibits. Lastly, every year the museum promotes its “Mothman festival” wherein people from all over the world come to learn about the legend- and hopefully catch a glimpse themselves.

Point Pleasant, West Virginia, is known nationally for its tourist-driving urban legend. The Mothman Museum’s website says as much, “IN NOVEMBER 1966, EERIE THINGS BEGAN TO OCCUR IN THE SMALL TOWN OF POINT PLEASANT. STRANGE LIGHTS IN THE SKY…MYSTERIOUS “MEN IN BLACK”…AND A FLYING RED-EYED CREATURE CALLED MOTHMAN CHANGED THIS SMALL WEST VIRGINIA TOWN….FOREVER.”
