This commemorative monument pays tribute to the defining moment when the United States purchased the land west of the Mississippi River. Important figures featured in the momentous occasion include President James Monroe, Robert Livingston, and Francis Barbe-Marbois. Originally commissioned in 1904 for the St. Louis World’s Fair, it was constructed out of plaster before being restored and recast in bronze. History buffs can marvel and reflect at the patriotic tableau on a walk around the Capitol in Downtown Jefferson City.
