Opening in 1953, the C.M. Russell Museum is an accredited museum of Western art. It is dedicated to celebrating the life and work of the original cowboy artist Charles M. Russell, the life and work of his contemporaries as well as current artists, and the life, culture, and history of the West. Through its collections, special exhibitions, educational programming, community events, and research opportunities, the museum seeks to further the understanding of the role that Charlie Russell played in the development of Western art and to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of the American West in art and culture.

With nearly 11,000 pieces, the museum has recently expanded its collection to house art of the Northern Plains Indians and the bison. Located where Charlie lived and worked during most of his professional career, the museum also houses Russell’s studio and home – both of which are listed as National Historic Landmarks.
